Baby Hair Color Changes: When Can Dark Newborn Hair Turn Blonde?

A baby born with nearly black hair can later develop blonde, brown, red, or another shade, even when both parents are blonde. Newborn hair often sheds during the first several months and may be replaced by hair with a different color and texture. However, there is no reliable age by which dark newborn hair must become blonde, and the final shade cannot be predicted from birth hair alone.

Why Blonde Parents Can Have a Dark-Haired Baby

Hair color is influenced by multiple genes rather than a single simple blonde-or-brown inheritance rule. Two blonde parents may carry genetic variants associated with darker pigmentation, particularly when darker hair appears elsewhere in either family. A child receives a different combination of these variants from each parent, so siblings can have noticeably different hair colors.

The hair visible at birth also does not necessarily represent the hair a child will have later. Newborn hair developed before birth under different hormonal and growth conditions. As that hair sheds and new strands enter a fresh growth cycle, the replacement hair may contain a different amount or distribution of pigment.

Dark newborn hair is not proof that a child will have dark hair permanently. It is equally important to recognize that blonde parents do not guarantee that their child will eventually become blonde.
